Re-Neighbouring
Intention
The majority of future cities, neighbourhoods, and homes have already been built. This project investigates how existing neighbourhoods can be "re-neighbored" to become places of respect, kindness, and locality. The project's goal is to gain a better understanding of neighbourhood dynamics, such as how we live alone and together, how to build thriving communities for people of diverse kinds, and how to empower local culture while still allowing for social distinctiveness.
Implementation
The meaning and potential of Re-Neighboring is investigated through close collaboration between HL/Ramboll and PACS staff and students at IBK, Architecture School Copenhagen. The students' work is focused on two Amager sites, where they reflect on life there and create visions, tools, and prototypes to Re-Neighbor the sites. Our task (the architects and staff) is to curate the student projects in order to gain a general understanding of Re-Neighboring and put this knowledge into practise.
Impact
The project's findings will inspire future projects at HL, Ramboll, and the industry, as well as new avenues for research and collaboration. The project's main impact will be in the summer of 2023. Our goal is to facilitate a Re-Neighboring session at the UIA congress, where the students will present the industry their critical view on Re-Neighboring.

Social renovations
Intention
Loneliness is a societal problem that affects people of all ages, but it disproportionately affects the young and the elderly. Loneliness is estimated to cost society 7 billion kroner per year. Social housing in Denmark differs from other types of housing in that more people live alone and the average age is older. As a result, BL, Landsbyggefonden, and Realdania have joined forces to investigate the potential of physical renovations of social housing areas to prevent loneliness. It is about encouraging a holistic approach to transformations that takes into account how to improve both the built environment and future life in it.
Implementation
The evaluation relies on several completed renovations of social housing areas as well as an in-depth analysis of two selected cases, with a focus on elderly residents. Skelagergrdene in Aalborg and VA 4 Raekke in Albertslund Syd differ from one another in terms of geographical location, housing typology, and area size. The data collection is based on fieldwork, qualitative interviews, and document review.
Impact
The project demonstrates that a relatively simple renovation can significantly reduce loneliness. According to the evaluation, physical renovations can help to strengthen communities within a housing area, thereby preventing loneliness. Physical interventions can have a social impact by making it easier to participate in the local community, commute, enjoy everyday life, and meet your neighbours, regardless of age, gender, or ethnicity. Physical renovations with a social impact can take place on a variety of levels and do not have to be more expensive.

Bystævneparken nursing home
Intention
This value programme serves as the foundation for the development of two new nursing homes in Bystaevneparken. There will be a total of 250 public care homes built, at least 100 of which will be dedicated to dementia patients. The value programme is intended to create the following values: 1. Socially inclusive nursing homes. 2. Architecture as a social facilitator. 3. Balance between living and working environments. 4. Generator of local qualities. 5. Local synergies with nearby public buildings.
Implementation
The value programme is based on a qualitative study investigating the residents' needs, challenges, and housing preferences, as well as relatives' and employees' needs and desires for a well-functioning nursing home with a high quality of life. We conducted both in-depth and semi-structured interviews as well as field visits in five nursing homes in Copenhagen, including both somatic and dementia care homes.
Impact
Design principles and future recommendations are developed, based on the empirical data, concerning five scales of the nursing home: the home, the housing unit, the care home, the building, and the local area. According to the analysis, the primary value of nursing homes is a synthesis of two ideas: 1. Sense of nature: Both inside and outside the building, the physical framework of the care homes must support sensory experiences of (urban) nature. 2. Social diversity: Nursing homes' physical structures must support a diverse way of living, group of residents and staff. The value programme demonstrates how the nursing home's physical framework can serve as a foundation for a good life - for residents, relatives, and staff. From personal privacy to community involvement to work life.
